Butterfly Stripe Quilt

I finished this large lap quilt finally today. I started it last year and it has been in my sewing room waiting to be quilted for months . The poor thing has been moved around the room so much , on the floor under the cupboard under the table and then back on the sewing table. I had brought the jelly roll from spotlight on a chuck out table and only payed a few dollars for it but when I opened it the 2 1/2 inch strips were very badly cut some looked like boomerangs with bows at the fold. also the colour was quite washed out. I found this you tube video called jelly roll race and decided that I give it a go. It was great fun and very fast . I had a top made in just over and hour. I would have been quicker if I had filled enough bobbins first.

Once the top was made it still looked pail so I added the butterfly silhouettes  and a couple of boarders. I still don't like it much . i keep thinking of the saying "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." I will put it in the caravan or may be use it on the lounge for Nanna naps.

Quilt

I have show quilts made by Melva before on this blog. She Has just had her 88th birthday and is nearly finished making a quilt for the second aged carer home here in Port Augusta. Melva made over 40 quilts for the high care home in 2009 -2010 and this years she has made 20 for the low care home . the quilt below is made from hexagons I was given that were stapled onto card and poorly sew A friend removed the staples and I washed the fabric. Which turned out to be very good quality and well worth using. Melva used all but two which were to small to made this quilt as you go.

Hidden Wells Quilt

I had a great day yesterday, 17 September our guild had a special workshop were we made a quilt top in a day.
The pattern is called Hidden wells.
The interested ladies were told to bring 1 mt of a bold floral or pattern and 4 other fabrics that blend at least a 35cm piece of each.
Above is my blocks placed out ready to sew together. I have not ironed them, once this was done I was ready to sew them in strips then the strips in to the quilt top.
This one is Jayne's she moved them to her sewing machine then some how mixed them up and had to sort them again.
This one is Joan's her top looks a bit different because she some how lost a whole strip but it looks fine.
I am holding the finished top, I was amazed how quick this strip method was. Jayne is behind me sorting out her blocks for the second time.

Wall hanging

The wall hanging centre panel is now complete all I need to make now are all the flowers for the spray down the side and across the bottom. I am loving how it looks so far. I have not shown any of the ladies from my quilting group I want to surprise them with the finished product.

Wall hanging

 Wall Hanging
I am making this for the exhibition we are having here in Port Augusta , the first weekend in June.

I have found it easier to  join each hexagon in strip from as above

Then join the strips to form the full flower as in the left photo. I tried to take a photo up close to show the strips. When I have made hexagon quilts in the past I have made each flower from the centre out to the edge but because these are so small only 1/2 inch I was always starting and stopping.

Here is part of the main panel made.Once I  include the single flower I have two more rows to add.
Below is what the finished wall hanging is supposed to look like when I have it all finished
I am using different colours. all I have done so far is the centre panel and I have all the flower hexagons cut out and tacked onto there papers ready to make the side spray. I am looking for wood grain fabric for the boarders I want to make it look like a picture frame.

Wall hanging

This Japanese wall hanging was what I entered in our last exhibition , two year ago in June
you can't see it on the photo but the background fabric has spirals on it, I beaded each one with size 11 beads . Its fun to see when people realize and then they have to touch it. This photo was taken before the binding was put on. It hangs in the entry was so is the first thing you see when you enter our home.

Quilt

Starry Night Quilt
I stated this quilt last year and then got bored with it and put it in the maybe finish cupboard. Well I needed something to do at quilting that was hand work so I fished it out. I had to even up the sides and now I can work on one edge and make it long enough to us as a bed quilt . I am using the English paper piecing  method. I am now happy with how its turning out. I may put it into the quilt exhibition or guild is having in  June. I am the president of the Port Augusta  guild and I should put at least one quilt in. My quilts are not as good at quilting as some of the ladies are but I try.
